Soulmate Audio and Audiofy Corporation Announce Products Based on New Digital Audiobook Standard at CES
by Anonymous
Las Vegas, NV January 6 2004--Soulmate Audiobooks is currently shipping a CEA/APA “Audiobook Compatible” Digital CD player and a full line of “Audiobook Format” MP3-CDs that store an entire audiobook on a single MP3-CD, compared to the eight CDs required to store an Audiobook using other technologies. Using the new standard, listeners can forward to specific chapters or pages of an audiobook, a feature also not available with other technology. The player also remembers the position for up to a dozen audiobooks at the same time.
Audiofy Corporation separately announced that it is also introducing new digital audiobook software, called the Audiofy™ Player Platform that is compliant with the CEA-2003 standard. Audiofy’s Platform enables audiobook content using the new format to be played on PCs, laptops, PDAs and other devices. The software also allows publishers to master digital audiobooks in the new format. As part of the partnership with Soulmate, Audiofy’s software is placed on Soulmate’s line of audiobooks on MP3-CD, so that customers can choose how and where they will listen to their audiobooks.
"CEA-2003A is the next step to bringing audiobooks into the Internet age," stated Anji Cornette, the co-chair of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) workgroup that created the standard. "Building on the original standard, we have now provided a way for device manufacturers, audiobook publishers and listeners to get on the same page to create and listen to digital audiobooks."
The CEA-2003A standard enables manufacturers of audio players, as well as software developers and audiobook publishers, to enhance the audiobook listening experience. Regardless of type of audio file or type of delivery system, CEA-2003A gives a roadmap for easy use and navigation of audiobooks. Supporting a variety of new capabilities, from digital download of audiobooks to the use of compatible MP3-CD players and other devices, the newest CEA/APA standards make audiobook listening more convenient to the user and less expensive for the audiobook manufacturer to create.
Audiobooks are a popular medium for Americans. Over 24 million Americans listen to audiobooks regularly. The market is estimated at over $2B in 2004.
